Excerpts from “Stand Strong Against the Wiles of the World”, a message by Gordon B. Hinckley

This is a message given by the prophet Gordon B. Hinckley to the women of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1995. His words are as true today as they were 24 years ago. Emphasis has been added.

“There has never been a time, at least in recent history, when you have been confronted with more challenging problems. I need not remind you that the world we are in is a world of turmoil, of shifting values. Shrill voices call out for one thing or another in betrayal of time-tested standards of behavior. The moral moorings of our society have been badly shaken. So many of the youth of the world, and likewise so many of their elders, listen only to the seductive voice of self-gratification. You single young women face tremendous challenges, and we know it is not easy for you. I cannot say enough of appreciation for your determination to live by the standards of the Church, to walk with the strength of virtue, to keep your minds above the slough of filth which seems to be moving like a flood across the world. Thank you for knowing there is a better way. Thank you for the will to say no. Thank you for the strength to deny temptation and look beyond and above to the shining light of your eternal potential.

How bitter are the fruits of casting aside standards of virtue. The statistics are appalling. More than one-fourth of all children born in the United States are born out of wedlock, and the situation grows more serious. Of the teens who give birth, 46 percent will go on welfare within four years; of unmarried teens who give birth, 73 percent will be on welfare within four years (see Starting Points—Meeting the Needs of Our Youngest Children, New York: Carnegie Corporation, 1994, pp. 4, 21). I believe that it should be the blessing of every child to be born into a home where that child is welcomed, nurtured, loved, and blessed with parents, a father and a mother, who live with loyalty to one another and to their children. I am sure that none of you younger women want less than this. Stand strong against the wiles of the world. The creators of our entertainment, the purveyors of much of our literature, would have you believe otherwise. The accumulated wisdom of centuries declares with clarity and certainty that the greater happiness, the greater security, the greater peace of mind, the deeper reservoirs of love are experienced only by those who walk according to time-tested standards of virtue before marriage and total fidelity within marriage. We pray that as you walk the paths of life you will walk in ways that are straight with the strength to conform even though those paths be narrow.

There are those who would have us believe in the validity of what they choose to call same-sex marriage. Our hearts reach out to those who struggle with feelings of affinity for the same gender. We remember you before the Lord, we sympathize with you, we regard you as our brothers and our sisters. However, we cannot condone immoral practices on your part any more than we can condone immoral practices on the part of others.

“All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.

“The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.

“We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.

“We call upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.”

-Gordon B. Hinckley, 1995

The Left vs. The Right

There are two sides to the horizontal axis of the political spectrum. On the left, you have the Democrats and the liberals. On the right, you have the Republicans and the conservatives. In this post, I will compare the two sides and highlight the some of the most important differences between them.

The Right:

  • Supports freedom of legitimate religion
  • Is against abortion (the act of killing babies)
  • Is in favor of lower taxes
  • Is in favor of the second amendment (the right to bear arms, particularly for self-defense)
  • Is in favor of LEGAL immigration

The Left:

  • Supports censorship of Christian beliefs, particularly in schools.
  • Supports abortion (the act of killing babies)
  • Is in favor of higher taxes
  • Desires heavy restrictions on guns, thus defeating the purpose of the second amendment
  • Welcomes illegal immigration

Lesser known Marvel Comics characters who made an appearance of some kind in the MCU

Charlie-27, a genetically enhanced super soldier, makes a brief appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as a member of the Ravagers. In Marvel Comics, he co-founds the Guardians of the Galaxy 3000 alongside the sonic arrow-wielding Yondu.

Skurge the Executioner is portrayed quite accurately in the MCU. Consistent with the Marvel Comics version of his character, he is an Asgardian who is eager to prove himself but does some terrible things. He regains his honor by sacrificing his life to save the people of Asgard from the wrath of Death Goddess Hela. Skurge appears only in Thor Ragnarok.

Ulysses Klaw is a terroristic scientist who repeatedly attacks and steals from the people of Wakanda. In Avengers Age of Ultron, his arm is torn off by Ultron. Using his scientific knowledge of sound, he creates a new arm for himself which doubles as a deadly sonic weapon. Klaw’s second and final appearance is in the movie Black Panther, in which he is killed by Killmonger.

The Shocker mantle is used by two different criminals in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He uses vibratory technology to enhance his strength and to destroy solid objects. In both the MCU and in Marvel Comics, he frequently battles Spider-Man–and usually loses.

Man-Ape (known simply as M’Baku in the MCU) is the Wakandan leader of the White Gorilla Tribe. Although he is almost always an enemy to Black Panther in Marvel Comics, he usually assists T’Challa as an ally in the MCU. He appears in 3 movies: Black Panther, Avengers Infinity War, and Avengers Endgame.

Beta Ray Bill is an alien superhero who (in the comics) is worthy to wield the mighty Asgardian weapon Stormbreaker. While he never makes an actual live appearance in the MCU, a statue of him can be seen on the Grandmaster’s tower on the planet Sakaar.

Uatu The Watcher and some of his fellow Watchers can be seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Stan Lee makes his signature cameo appearance in this movie where he is shown talking to the Watchers on a moon.

Edwin Jarvis is the Stark family butler (Marvel’s equivalent of Alfred Pennyworth). His final appearance in the MCU is where he is briefly shown serving Howard Stark in Avengers Endgame. He later serves Tony Stark as an artificial intelligence.

Mac Gargan, known as The Scorpion in Marvel Comics, appears in Spider-Man Homecoming as a criminal who works with The Vulture. Although he never actually takes up the role of The Scorpion in the MCU, Gargan’s scorpion tattoo is a reference to the Marvel Comics’ version of his character.

Adam Warlock is briefly mentioned in one of the post credit scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Unfortunately, Marvel scrapped the idea and so he never made an actual appearance in the MCU.

The Atonement of Jesus Christ

Two millennia ago, Jesus Christ went to the Garden of Gethsemane. There, He suffered and atoned for the sins and pains of all who would ever live upon the earth. So great was His suffering that He sweat blood from every pore. Because of this unrivaled sacrifice, we can all be forgiven of our sins if we repent.

“God be thanked for the matchless gift of His divine Son.”
